How house plants benefit us in many ways

Many people enjoy indoor gardening, whether they live in a house, an apartment, or a condominium. We spend about 90 percent of our time indoors. Incorporating plants into your home is not a replacement for the outdoors but a good compromise. There are many different plants to choose from that will go best with your home. Plants create a soothing and pleasing environment. You spend most of your time indoors, so why not make a beautiful living environment. Adding plants to your home will improve your health and overall happiness.

We are instinctively connected to nature and plants. The biophilia effect occurs when we are exposed to life. Edward O. Wilson, a scientist, naturalist, and author, describes this phenomenon in his book "Biophilia" (1984). Humans are social organisms with an innate tendency to seek interactions with other living things. With technology improvements and individuals being indoors for more extended periods, this has become increasingly significant in the current day. The incorporation of plants into your house will allow you to connect with nature from the comfort of your own home.

The presence of plants has psychological and physical effects. Joey Doherty, a certified Wellness Counselor, explains that soil contains microbes that produce outdoorphins. As a result, our bodies begin to produce cytokines, which eventually lead to the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter or also known as the happiness hormone. This molecule is a chemical messenger that travels from your brain to your whole body. The hormone regulates mood and reduces anxiety and depression to uplift mood. Serotonin also has a calming effect allowing you to lower blood pressure and sleep better. Furthermore, serotonin narrows arteries and forms blood clots. The presence of plants triggers a positive response.

Not only do plants improve mood, but they also produce a beautiful, calming, and pleasant environment. Plants are a simple and attractive way to decorate a room. There is a vast selection; you may choose plants of various sizes, colours, and necessities, with flowers or just leaves. You can even have fun with the different pots like ceramic, copper, glass, plastic, etc. You can get cuttings from friends and family. You may consider buying from a local shop or propagating your plant from scratch. Owning a plant does not need to be costly or time and energy-consuming.

House plants go through photosynthesis, and this is a process by which plants use water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar. Plants absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it to oxygen. So the product of plants is oxygen, which is what all aerobic creatures (organisms that live and grow in oxygenated environments) rely on for survival. The plants survive on the carbon dioxide we expel, and we survive on the oxygen they release, so both organisms depend on each other to live. NASA's clean air study found that mechanical items emit toxic gasses. Fortunate for us, plants can absorb these volatile pollutants and replace them with oxygen. So, you can boost air quality by simply having plants in a room.

There is so much diversity with plants and ways of utilizing them to decorate your home. Not only do plants bring beauty into your home, but it stimulates serotonin production. This hormone improves mood and makes you feel relaxed. Furthermore, plants use photosynthesis as means of survival, they absorb the carbon dioxide, and we use the oxygen they produce, which can boost air quality within the room. So try to connect yourself with nature within the comfort of your home.
